NAPLES, Fla. – Capable of
withstanding 140-mile-per-hour winds, resistant to fading, and
able to become hurricane-protected at the touch of a button,
Home & Condo’s 2004 Dream Home is the Superman of luxury
living in a storm-safe environment. The home, which opens for
public tours in February 2004, has been designed with consideration
of Florida’s unique climate – mainly mosquitoes and
weather-related problems such as fading sunshine and the possibility
of hurricanes. Its media room even doubles as a safe room.
On the outside, the $5.65 million Dream Home is a four-bedroom,
six-bathroom luxury home at The Estates at TwinEagles. Visitors
can’t see the motorized roll-down hurricane shutters or
tell that the Altusa clay roof tiles have been installed to meet
140-mph wind gusts. And they don’t know that the metal
roof over the porte-cochere has a special no-fade coating designed
especially for Florida. Future homeowners, however, will have
the peace of mind in knowing the home was created to weather
the storm.
Hurricane shutters that have been incorporated into the architecture
protect
the Dream Home’s expansive covered verandah. Just push a button and “Skeeter
Beater” screens provide mosquito-free living. Another button activates
the hurricane shutters, creating an instant indoor room and closing it off from
the perils of Mother Nature. “When the house is open you have a great view
looking across the lake on one side and the golf course on the other,” said
Dan Gerner, executive vice president of builder McGarvey Custom Homes. “You
can’t tell there are hurricane shutters until they are activated. And closing
the shutters eliminates the need to move furniture from the lanai.”
With
its comfortable furnishings, state-of-the-art technology and
location within the center of the home, the hurricane-safe
media room will offer future homeowners a place to escape – inclement
weather or not. And the home’s capability of accommodating
a back-up generator will help those future occupants stay in
touch during power outages.
“
We designed this home to exceed Florida’s new hurricane
building codes,” said Rich Guzman, president of R.G. Designs
Inc., a residential design firm. “And that should give
future homeowners peace of mind.”
Led by President John McGarvey, McGarvey Custom Homes has been
building high-end custom homes in the Southwest Florida area
since 1996. Prior to relocating to Southwest Florida, the homebuilder
was based in southern New Jersey for more than two decades.
